LADYBUGS: GARDENERS’ BEST FRIENDS.
The other day I posted a blog on living alternatives to chemical pesticides. Today’s blog takes a closer look at “beneficial insects”, in particular ladybugs. Why post this blog now, in the middle of the summer? Because NOW is the time to release ladybugs in your garden. Read on!
Ladybugs start off life as small larvae that some say resemble a black and orange crocodile. Hungry despite their small size, the larvae feed on the same insects as the adults. After several weeks of growing, the larvae pupate and emerge as adults. The adults continue to feed, mate, lay eggs and start a new cycle. If you are lucky, they will lay their eggs in your back yard.
Depending on the size of your garden, for approximately $30, you can rid your garden of aphids, mites, scales, thrips and small insect larvae. You may or may not know that pests such as aphids, mites and small caterpillars tend to destroy your plants. They are difficult to see with the naked eye. They are often difficult to get rid of. Given the ban on the use of chemical pesticides in most municipalities, ladybugs are sure to become an important ally to the majority of gardeners. Ladybugs will eat your “enemies”, i.e. the aphids, mites, scales, thrips and small insect larvae.
This is how it works:

What can we do about all those earwigs?
Do you feel invaded by earwigs? These insects find their way into your garden chair cushions, under towels, inside your beautiful flowers, everywhere! The solution: insecticidal soap.
As it happens, Bioprotec sop is a ready-to-use insecticidal soap made with fatty acid salts of potassium to control earwigs and soft body insects (aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, mealybugs). Without alcohol, Bioprotec sop soap minimizes leafburning. biofloris.com/products_natural_insecticical_soap.html

Water! Water! Water!
Yes, even despite the rainy conditions Mother Nature has been spoiling us with. Of course, everything depends on your garden’s orientation, the type of soil, inclination levels…All these factors influence how quickly or slowly the soil dries out. For example, clayey soil tends to drain more slowly. Check your soil regularly for moisture, and water where and when required.
Kits : what a wonderful idea!

Annual flower-beds, perennials, vegetable gardens…all seem to be maturing and have almost reached the height of their beauty. After an intensive month of gardening in June, gardeners in general tend to water a tad more irregularly at this point. Still, it is important to remain vigilant and inspect both sides of leaves thoroughly, to ensure there are no unwanted guests. Also, plants appreciate it when one gets rid of dead flowers to prevent seeds from taking their place. This lets plants look better, flower more abundantly and last longer.
Most gardeners believe that one or two fertilizer applications will do the trick. However, plants need to feed CONSTANTLY. It is strongly recommended to feed flowering plants (annuals and perennials) with fertilizer, such as marine algae, every two weeks to give plants strength and allow them to flourish even more!
Biofloris offers the highest quality marine-based fertilizers on the market. Our fertilizers complement each other to provide optimal growing conditions for your plants. Our fertilizers have not been treated chemically in any way. They are designed to both stimulate the growth of beneficial organisms in the soil and release nutrients to feed your plants. Nutrients are released slowly, giving your plants enough time to absorb them, which helps prevent root burn and the leaching of excess nutrients into the soil.
On the other hand, some annuals, such as cosmos, nasturtium, purslane, and marigolds flower better when cultivated in a less nutrient soil.

Inspect your garden
Now is the period when we see caterpillars appear on vegetable and fruit plants and on shade, ornamental and coniferous trees.
At the very first sight of caterpillars, while they are small and young, proceed with an application of BTK Bioprotec, a biological insecticide. BTK is a fast-acting biological control agent that kills caterpillars soon after it is ingested. You will notice positive results 2 to 5 days of applying BTK. If the problem persists, you can re-apply weekly. BTK is completely safe for all other organisms, including beneficial insects, birds and house pets.
Use BTK Bioprotec on broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, mustard, spinach, tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers to combat false looper (inchworm), cabbage worms and tomato hornworms. BTK is also effective against budworm on strawberries, pears and apples.

It’s starting to get hot outside!
What with the climate changes, our gardens are getting less precipitation than they used to. Don’t forget to check your soil regularly to ensure it’s not too dry. Dig a hole about 10 cm deep; if the earth feels warm and dry, it means it needs to be watered.
The annuals you recently planted in your flowerbeds require extra checking to make sure they are adapting well to their new environment and are growing beautifully.
Flower pots are even more demanding when it comes to water than plants growing in the ground.
Time of day is equally important. Never water at mid-day; the best is watering early in the morning or at the beginning of the evening; be sure to give leaves enough time to dry to avoid the risk of sicknesses caused mainly by fungus.
Fertilizers
Even if you fertilized while planting, it’s time to repeat the dosage to make plants stronger and to stimulate growth. For best results, make sure soil is humid before fertilizing. This allows plants to better absorb the “vitamins” they are fed and thus to produce more vigorously.
